Victor/Victoria
Hank Mancini and I were destined to write literally dozens of new songs during the yawning gap of years between the Hollywood movie and the Broadway show, because there ensued a paralysing series of delays that would themselves make a pretty interesting musical. After an absence of 30 long years though, the show finally brought Julie Andrews triumphantly back to Broadway at the Marquis Theatre in October 1995, where she performed the incredibly complex double role of Victor and Victoria almost 800 times. Now, another decade later, the show is firmly established internationally, currently a huge hit in Madrid, starring Paloma San Basilio, with further new productions due in Moscow, Mexico City, and Argentina in the next couple of years.
