Sherlock Holmes
During the writing of Sherlock Holmes - The Musical, I became increasingly amazed that the world's continuing insatiable appetite for any and every conceivable tidbit of information concerning The World's Greatest Detective. As far back as 1974, The World Biography of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, compiled by Ronald Burt De Waal, listed no fewer than 6,221 known items of Holmes related material. To add anything further to this already overwhelming Everest of Holmesiana might seem both redundant and presumptuous, but in Sherlock Holmes - The Musical, I provided Holmes with a new London home - namely in this flourishing present-day entertainment form, which was already popular in Holmes own time - adding my own tiny tribute to the enduring and undoubted doyen of all the detectives ever created, so aptly described by his devoted Watson as "the best and the wisest man I have ever known".
